Jerzy Panek

Jerzy Panek (1918 – 2001). He was born in Tarnów. He studied at the Print Faculty of the State Institut of Fine Arts in Cracow (1937-42). In 1945-48 he continued education at the Painting Department of the Academy of Fine Arts in Cracow. He graduated in 1955. He is a member of the International Woodcut Society XYLON. He produced a few hundred woodcuts and great amount of drawings. He was mainly using woodcut as a print technique but also various metal techniques. He was a painter, too. His works were presented on numerous individual exhibitions in Poland and abroad and took part in a few hundred group shows of Polsh art. He won many prizes and distinctions, e.g.:the Minister of Culture and Art Prize (1963), the Press Award at the International Print Biennial in Cracow (1972), the J.Cybis Award (1988). He won the Gold Medal at the Art Triennial in Delhi (1971). In 1993 the Senate of the Academy of Fine Arts honoured him with title of the Honorary Professor. For his all artistic activity he was given the Award of City of Cracow and the Award of the Governor of Małopolska (1998).

The artist had nine individual exhibitions in Jan Fejkiel Gallery. He also took part in collective shows organised by the gallery, i.a.: Winners & Followers, JFG, Cracow 1991; Polish Institute of Culture, Stockholm 1991; The Ironic Portrait, the State Gallery (1993, Cracow, Kielce, Łódż), Forum Ost-West (1994, Bergisch Gladbach); Stone, Metal, Wood, Computer ,Cracow Expo Center(1994); The Element and the Method, Galerie de la C.G.E.R. (1996, Liege), Centrum Manggha (1997, Cracow); Mondo Cane, JFG, (2001, Cracow), The State Gallery (2002, Kielce).
